PROJECT : MUSEUM AS A MUSE
Collaboration with the National Maritime Museum & Queens House, Know Your Worth Programme and Performing and Production Arts Department at Lewisham College.

Dates: 2nd February – 2nd March 2021.

We were delighted to announce that throughout February 2021 the Know Your Worth support programme worked alongside the National Maritime Museum, Queens House and our performing and production arts students at Lewisham College.
This month-long series of workshop challenges have been specifically devised by Ian Shillito and Chi Onura Learning Programme Producer for Royal Museums Greenwich in order to introduce historical interpretation as viable careers for creative students and theatre makers as well as underpinning a stronger sense of cultural capital.

The following work captures young creatives as they see themselves or as other see them. Some of the work is a response to the Queen Anne of Denmark painting, The Armada Portrait, Hogarth's Captain Lord George in his Cabin, Ghost Meridian by BLKbird Collective, Whose Government by DeanioX and Nathan Bowen housed in the collection at National Maritime Museum and Queens House.

1. WHAT PROJECT DID YOU WORK / COLLABORATE / OR PARTNER WITH US ON ?

National Maritime Museum partnered with Know Your Worth program on Museum as Muse digital. We worked together to plan a digital project that would act as stepping stone between theatre and heritage sites. At the core of the project was making the Museums Collections relevant and accessible to students who may never have been to a museum or gallery and were unlikely to do so. The aim of the project was to make the National Maritime Museum and Queens House Collections truly accessible and highlight viable career routes within cultural establishments.
Over 4 weeks we worked with the Know Your Worth Program at Lewisham College to deliver 7 digital workshops and challenges which challenged students to use their Theatrical and artistic skills to respond to the Museums Collections, think critically, be creative, connect with, and express fresh perspectives on our past.

2. WHAT DID THE MUSEUM GET FROM THIS PROJECT ?

We gained an insight on a number of important issues for young people and how we can better use our collections to support these. One being the need to better highlight the important role creative professionals play in interpreting and sharing our collections. We also learnt which parts of our collections were most interesting for young people, their opinions and how they want to engage and respond to our collections. At the end of the project we were able to create an impressive mix-media gallery which not only showcased the fantastic work from the students involved in the project but also works as a resource and source of inspiration for other schools and colleges.

3. HOW DID YOU FIND WORKING WITH IAN, SAM AND KYW YOUNG CREATIVES ?

They have been absolutely brilliant, it has been an honour and pleasure! This had originally been an inhouse project however at short notice was adapted into a digital project due to the Pandemic. Ian and the students adapted to a new and un-planned format for the project quickly and effectively. It has been a great experience to co-develop the project content with Ian fusing the Museum's and Know Your Worth Expertise in how to engage young people. We were very impressed by the students' fantastic responses and final pieces, despite the fact they were having to complete the course from home with limited access to resources particularly digital devices.

3. WOULD YOU LIKE TO DEVELOP THE PROJECT FURTHER?

Absolutely we hope to run this project annually in collaboration with Know Your Worth.

4. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WORKING WITH KYW?

Yes, they have fantastic energy, ideas and are reaching important groups of young people during a very challenging climate for them.

5. IS IT CLEAR WHAT KYW ETHOS IS FROM WORKING WITH US ?

It is clear they aim to give young creatives the chance to express themselves encouraging them to develop cultural capital and potential for the future. We can see KYW provides an opportunity for students with limited exposure to traditional museum and heritage gallery settings to develop a sense of ownership and belonging, and to be able to link into the wider community.
